Cassette 1: Side A
Hannah Baker introduces Justin Foley the first person and reason why she committed suicide. It all started when Hannah Baker had her first with Justin Foley at a playground. The kiss to Hannah was a memory she could remember forever until a rumor went around saying it was more than just one kiss. To Hannah's surprise Justin went along with the rumor and did not speak up. The rumor that was based off the kiss was one of the reasons she committed suicide. This rumor began the snowball effect of everything being too much.
While Clay listens to this cassette tape all he can think about is why he is on Hannah's list of reasons. As Hannah goes on and talks about the rumor that started Clay remembers believing in the rumor that started. Clay looked at Hannah different once the rumor began and so did everyone else in school.

Cassette 1: Side B
On this side of tape 1 Clay doesn't hear his name, he hears Alex Standall. Hannah talks about the list that Alex created and that was passed to all the boys in her class. The list was about who had the best butt in the freshmen class. Every boy in the class voted that Hannah had the best butt. This was the biggest reason out of all the other ones because Alex's list created a reputation for Hannah that wasn't true. Because of Alex's list people began to treat Hannah as if she was nothing. People only cared for Hannah's butt and nothing else . An example of that was at Blue Spot Liquor when a jerk ,Hannah did not want to mention, smacked her butt.
Clay visists the place where Hannah got smacked and listens to the tape thinking about the stupid lists Alex would make up and he would sometimes answer them. Now as Clay looked back at it he shouldn't have answered any of the lists at all because he admitted to himself that it did make a difference in what people thought not only about Hannah but also about the other people on Alex's list.

Hannah begins this tape talking about being new to town and having no friends until she met Jessica Davis at Monet's Garden Cafe and Coffeehouse. At the beginning of knowing each other everything went quite smoothly, they even meet Alex who was also new in town at the time. All three off them were just happy that they wouldn't be walking alone in the hallways on the first day of school. As time went on each of them didn't talk to each other at all until Alex's list was created. Hannah was voted best butt and Jessica was voted worst butt. The same day Alex's list was created that was the day Hannah got the scar above her eyebrow. The scar that was created by Jessica, to Hannah the scar was not just a scar to Hannah the scar was a reminder to her that even Jessica the person Hannah spent the first couple of weeks at school with believed all the rumors from the list. The scar Jessica created was a reason that Hannah saw every day.
As Clay listens to this side of the cassette tape he is on a bus driving to Monet's and wondered that the list was a contributor to the scar Hannah received and he begins to feel guilty for not taking Alex's list and throwing it away.Clay is thinking he could have changed Hannah's outcome of all of this.

Hannah introduces Zach Dempsey when she talks about her Peer Communications class. In that class each student had a paper bag that had notes of encouragement in them. Hannah started to get suspicious when everyone else was getting notes and she wasn't. People got notes about there hair or make-up and Hannah got a huge haircut. She got her long hair cut-off. Hannah found out that someone which was Zach was taking her notes because she wrote a not to herself and the next day it was gone and she caught Zach stealing her notes. To Hannah it was a major deal because she would rely on those notes for hope that the notes could have offer. She thought that at least someone would have noticed her haircut. This tape talks about Hannah really choosing suicide as a way out. The next day Hannah put a note in the teacher's bag and it said that she was considering suicide but she didn't sign her name. The teacher the talked about warning signs and one of the signs was changes in appearance and nobody got a clue that Hannah was truly thinking about suicide.

Cassette 5: Side A
This tape talks about the one and only Clay Jensen and Hannah's feelings for Clay. Hannah admits that Clay's name should not be on her list well at least like the other people's names. To Hannah Clay was the boy that was perfect no one ever had something bad to say about him. In this tape Hannah tells everyone that when you mess with a person's life it doesn't just mess with a little part it messes with the person's whole life. One night at a party Hannah and Clay connected. With everything in Hannah's head Clay was a reason she didn't want to kill herself. Clay made Hannah feel comfortable and he talked to her with kindness which very few people did with Hannah. That's all Hannah every wanted was someone to talk to. While Hannah and Clay talked at the party he knew and understood that the rumors that were spread about Hannah were untrue. Hannah then kissed Clay and it felt right to her and no one was around. She then told Clay to stop because she didn't want her kiss with Clay to end up like her first kiss with Justin. She told Clay to leave and that she wanted to be alone and think. Hannah thought how everyone connected to form a puzzle. At the end of the tape Hannah says that she is sorry to Clay.
As Clay is listening to this tape he felt the same way Hannah did that they were meant for each other and that they understood each other. He also felt relieved when he found out that he was a good reason not a bad one. Clay then is mad at himself for not seeing the signs and he should have not listened to Hannah. He should have stayed with her and helped her with her problems but at the time he did not know what was going on with Hannah. He just wishes he could go back and time and see Hannah again and make things right.

At that time Justin lets this guy in while Jessica was passed out and this guy raped Jessica. Justin didn't do anything and neither did Hannah who was still in the closet. Not only was Hannah made at herself for not stopping it but she was also mad a Justin for not stopping it. After many minutes the guy left and Hannah ran out of the closet in the hall where she founds Justin sitting there with a sad face. Hannah didn't entirely make this tape for Justin but for this guy. Hannah knew if this guy heard these tapes he would not have passed them on.

This tape is for Jenny Kurtz as Hannah would say. Jenny offered Hannah a ride home from the party. As the two of them were driving Jenny suddenly slammed into a curb and knocked over a stop sign. Hannah insisted that Jenny call the police and let them know that the stop sign fell over but Jenny didn't listen and told Hannah to get out. Hannah got out of the car and went to a gas station a few blocks away from the place where the stop sign had fallen. At the gas station Hannah called 911 to tell them the stop sign fell but the police said someone was already there but it wasn't for the stop sign it was for the accident that was caused by not having a stop sign there and a senior at Hannah and Jenny's school died because the there was no stop sign. Hannah tells Jenny that she could have saved the boy's life if she would have just called the cops as soon as it happened.
Cassette 6: Side B
Before Hannah talks about whom this second to last tape is about she talks about the ways she thought of killing herself. She first though of shooting herself with a gun but then she realized that she wouldn't know where to get a gun. Her second option was to hang herself but she didn't want her parents to be scared and shocked finding Hannah just hanging there. She even thought of driving her car off the side of the road and having people think it was an accident but Hannah decided to overdose on pills. Now after she talks about the ways she thought of killing herself she gets to the point of this tape and who it's about. This tape Hannah made for Bryce Walker the guy who raped Jessica. Hannah walked past Bryce's house to get to her house when he invited her over to come in the hot tub with him and a few other people. Hannah knew she shouldn't have done it but she decided to go in the hot tub anyway. The other people left shortly after and it was just Bryce and Hannah. Bryce then began to get closer to Hannah and began to tough her. Then Hannah let Bryce do it. She let Bryce rape her. That was the one thing that Hannah needed to push her over the edge. The next day she killed herself.

Mr. Porter thought Hannah was going to him for boy trouble he never saw the big picture Hannah was trying to paint for him. He said that Hannah should move on and get passed everything and to Hannah that was giving up. By the time she finished her session with Mr. Porter her mind was made up.
